Telford
Telford is one of the 'second generation' new towns, designated in 1963 to stimulate economic growth and provide Telford as well as new housing for the West Midlands. The area was expanded in 1968 and renamed Telford, after the famous civil engineer Thomas Telford.
The new town area is the 'Telford' part of the Borough of Telford and Wrekin and it is now recognised as one of the UK's fastest growing, most successful towns.
The borough offers a combination of the old and the new. Historic areas like the World Heritage Site at Ironbridge, sit alongside modern shopping and leisure facilities, landscaped business parks and carefully planned housing estates.
Telford and its district centres have seen many changes over the years and have an industrial heritage and more recent new town history to be proud of. It is widely accepted, however, that a number of economic, social and environmental challenges will be faced over the next 10 years as the area continues to fulfill its role as a regional growth centre.

So that the future of the borough is bright Transforming Telford is taking the lead, with parthers, on a number of projects. These include:
- Transforming Telford Town Centre
- Developing new employment sites
- Regenerating Industrial Estates
- Regenerating the South Telford Housing Estates
- Telford
In order to support these projects and the growth potential of the town, Transforning Telford and partners will also develop the business base, support growth sectors, entrepreneurship and focus on the skills of the workforce as well as Telford.
